The Youth Export Mentoring Program
Target Markets: South Carolina and Georgia

The Southeastern United States comprises a population of over 34.2 million. Thirty-four “Fortune 500” companies are headquartered here. The region leads all other American regions in the six major retail segments—food, apparel, automotive, furnishings, pharmaceuticals and leisure.

South Carolina:

  • International trade pumps $10.7 billion in sales, $2.6 billion in wages and $314 million in taxes into South Carolina's economy every year.
  • It is the State with the second highest percentage of citizens working for internationally owned companies (one in 28 jobs is related to international trade).
  • Charleston is America's fourth largest container port. It has become the doorway to world markets for thousands of firms. The Charleston region features twelve general purpose Foreign Trade Zones (FTZ) for duty-free storage and processing.

Georgia:

  • Although agriculture has traditionally played a strong role in Georgia's economy, the state has very well-developed manufacturing and services industries.
  • The state has a flourishing high-tech industry and offers opportunities for strategic alliances in specialized niches such as biotechnology and site remediation.
  • Atlanta, with a population of 4.4 million persons, is in particular a leading test market for business-to-business services, including software and telecommunications applications. Delta Air Lines, UPS (United Parcel Service), Home Depot and Coca-Cola are among the many corporate giants headquartered in Atlanta.

The Youth Export Mentoring Program
The World Trade Centre Atlantic Canada (WTCAC) is offering an ACOA-funded support program for young Nova Scotia entrepreneurs who have potential export-related products/services or who are new to exporting.

Please check the schedule to attend one of our upcoming Information sessions around the province.

Target Clients: Youth Entrepreneurs
The Youth Entrepreneur Mentoring Program meets the needs of youth-owned/run businesses by providing them with export assistance through mentoring and in-market trips.

Eligibility
• Small to medium-sized multi-sector businesses with owners or decision-makers who are 35 years old or younger, from across Nova Scotia.
• companies which have potential export-related products/services or are new to exporting
• companies that are in good standing with ACOA

The program consists of three components:

I. Mentoring/Training

• training on how to do business internationally
• teaching negotiation and sales techniques
• learning to network effectively
• promoting their company to international clients
• introducing companies to potential buyers, partners, distributors and suppliers
• meeting with industry and government experts
• gaining first-hand experience in an international marketplace
• effectively following up on leads

II. Two Market Visits to the Southeastern United States

• Market familiarization trip to Charleston, South Carolina and Atlanta, Georgia.  During the trip companies will receive information on doing business in the Southeastern United States.  The companies will conduct market research and gather competitive intelligence.
• The second trip is a traditional trade mission back to the Southeastern United States during which participants will use their training to make a sale.   Each company will benefit from matchmaking with potential buyers, partners, and distributors and will also participate in two networking receptions where local businesses will be invited.

III. Follow-up Program

In following up from the trade mission, each company will have the opportunity to continue working with the mentor assigned to them.
