The principal activities at the HPA include administering and promoting the Halifax Harbour as well as the Bedford Basin and the Northwest Arm. The HPA is also responsible for building and maintaining its own port facilities that it rents to expert operators. In addition, the HPA owns and leases harbour "waterlots", allocates berths and anchorages and works closely with the Department of National Defence, Canada Coast Guard and Transport Canada in planning for harbour emergencies.
The Halifax Port Authority leads in the development of the Port of Halifax thereby serving as a catalyst for the local, regional and national economies. The port is a unique and valuable strategic asset for the Halifax Regional Municipality, the province of Nova Scotia, and all Canadians. The HPA is a local port authority with responsibility to manage and market Port of Halifax facilities to generate economically viable and beneficial business at the port.
