Beginning

Created in June 2002, the Nova Scotia Department of Energy is a consolidation of the Nova Scotia Petroleum Directorate and the energy-related activities of the Nova Scotia Department of Natural Resources.

Purpose

To serve as the government’s focal point in the development of the province’s energy resources, as outlined in the Energy Strategy.

Building our energy industry and making the most of the opportunities in our offshore continue to be priorities for the Department of Energy. Balanced with our commitment to improving our environment and informing Nova Scotians, the department of Energy continues to play a key role in developing a vibrant and prosperous Nova Scotia.

Responsibilities

The Department is responsible for a wide range of initiatives in the following areas:

  • Energy Transportation and Utilization Policy and Analysis
  • Resource Assessment and Royalties
  • Climate Change
  • Business and Technology
  • Communications and Public Education
